What a week...

As I mentioned below we had a great start to last week but finished it off with pink eye and a sinus infection. We went to our pediatrician on Thursday for antibiotics, but by Monday only the pink eye had gone away. And by this time I was just as sick as Kaylee, so we spent most of our days in our pj's. Kaylee was busy dumping out her toys and playing with them but needed to rest for a minute.

Breakfast in the family room? Not such a great idea mom.

Call in the clean-up crew

So by Monday Kaylee wasn't getting better and our ped was now on vacation for 2 weeks so we had to go see an on-call doctor at another practice. I dreaded it the whole way there because I love our doctor, but I was so impressed with this other practice that we actually may switch!! Anyway, Kaylee was very congested in her chest so this doctor sent us to the hospital for a chest x-ray to check for pneumonia. She also gave Kaylee a shot of antibiotic to cover her for 24 hours (in addition to the stuff she was already taking) and assured us she'd call the next day with the x-ray results. I was also very sick so this took a lot out of us. Fortunately John was able to get off of work early and meet us at the hospital for a little "after hours x-raying" which of course means that results will not be in until the next day.

Luckily she didn't have pneumonia!! Whatever the antibiotic shot was, was a miracle drug! She was better within hours of the shots and has progressed nicely. I had to go back to the doctor the following day for myself. This whole "go out in public and bring germs home" really sucks! I can see why people become shut-ins. ha! Kaylee is over all her crud and I'm slowly getting there.

Kaylee's tree

Kaylee's tree bloomed a few blossoms this summer and by the time all the stars aligned to actually take pictures (john being home to take the picture, Kaylee and me not looking sickly, and not 110 out) those blossoms are almost gone. Oh well...

I can't believe it's not butter!

Kaylee prefers to lounge in her high chair, sitting off to one side rather than directly in the middle of the seat. She uses her left foot up against the left side of the chair to hold herself in place in her beloved right corner of the chair. The other night we went to take her out of the chair only to find that she was stuck. Her foot had gone through the slats of the high chair and wasn't going to budge. I was ready to get some tools and bust open the slats when John had the brilliant idea of using the random spray butter we had in the back of the fridge. I bought this spray several years ago when we were having friends over for dinner and I knew it was something they enjoyed. But I don't think it's been used since and has just been taking up space in our fridge. Little did we know it would come in handy! So with a little spritz here and a little spray there, rub rub rub, out slid her foot. Whew! Crisis averted!

Today she did it again, but for some reason it slid out just fine this time.

A fun week!

This week we've been busy! We've gone to parks...

We went to a pool with friends...
Eating cookies after swimming is very important business!

Then we went to Little Gym...

And we had plans to go swimming again this week but Kaylee came down with a sinus infection and pink eye. Poor girl! After a long week, this is how she slept in the car on the way home from the doctor...

My first otter pop!

A Picnic in the Park

Busy Social Calendar!

We spent 9 days in CA, then got back to NC just in time for Mandy and Seth to come out here to visit for 7 days! Kaylee wanted to give Aunt Mandy kisses all day long. So Mandy, being such a good aunt, puckered up for a lot of wide-open mouth kisses from Kaylee.

"No Aunt Mandy! I can do it myself!"

"See...."

Then John, Kim, and Chandon came up to Sanford for the second half of the Haak NC Trip! Chandon is about to turn 5 years old and so we set out on a mission to keep him busy. One day we drove the 1 1/2 hours to the Asheboro Zoo. This would have been a great day of animals and fun except for the 102 degree weather outside. We made it half way through the park and had to leave for fear of heat stroke! Luckily Chandon and Kaylee both seemed to enjoy the animals that we did see so it was worth the trip.
Kaylee thought the Puffins swimming under the water were funny. She followed them really well and laughed at them.

In front of the Mountain Lion habitat. He could have been fake for all we knew...he never moved from his tree stump.

The next day we went to Marbles Kid Museum in Raleigh. We all had a good time, what a fun place!

Then we went to a park where of course Kaylee HAD to swing. ;)

Fun times with Aunt Mandy and Uncle Seth!!! Can't wait to live closer to them!

An update finally!

We had a great time celebrating Kaylee's 1st birthday in San Jose! She adjusted to CA time perfectly and loved meeting and being around so many new people.

Annika, Bridget and I made Kaylee's cake and cupcakes. I had researched and practiced ideas for several months (poor John had to eat all my creations haha), but I could not have pulled this off without Annika and Bridget!

As always she prefers the things she isn't suppose to have...wire antennas for example.

YAY!! It's my birthday!

Kaylee wasn't sure of her cake and preferred to eat it with a fork. But even with a fork she spit out the cake. She's never eaten anything with a consistency like cake or sugary stuff so she was very unsure of it all.

So we gave her a cupcake instead since it was smaller and less intimidating than a huge cake. She still wouldn't eat the cake, but figured out that she likes frosting! Still not a drop of cake or frosting on her dress though.
Yay for frosting!!

Silly Daddy, this is MY frosting!

The rest of the trip flew by. We enjoyed every minute but it went too fast.

Driving Grandpa Rowe's tractor

Grandpa and Kaylee found an old bird egg!

Grandpa Woertman!

Kaylee swam in a real swimming pool for the first time and she loved it! We went swimming another time while we were out there and she is a natural in the water.

And we had a playdate with Sofia! Kaylee and Sofia are 3 days apart and seem to rival for the most updates on our monthly blogs. We had a great time playing with Sofia and Amy at the park where Sofia showed off her crawling skills. A few hours later Kaylee started crawling! Thanks Sofia for being such an inspiration!

So for our monthly/year update:
It seems like Kaylee really matured during month 11. She is very lady like, preferring to eat with forks and spoons rather than her fingers. She eats with a fork almost perfectly and handles a spoon well as long as the food can't fall off (ie. oatmeal). Although she still likes to eat spaghetti with her hands. She spent the month trying to crawl but realized that rolling is so much faster...and boy is she fast at rolling! She currently does the GI Joe crawl to get places and is working on perfecting a real crawl. Her top 2 front teeth are working on their appearance. She nods her head for yes and shakes her head for no to answer questions. She is learning to stop doing something when we say "no". And she perfected her clapping to finally make noise when her hands hit each other! Of course, that means we clap for everything now. When we say "Kaylee, wave bye bye" she claps instead.

Poor girl caught pink eye and a sinus infection as soon as we got home (I think it was from the gross people surrounding us on the plane ride home), all while those top teeth were breaking though. She's been a trooper through it all though and hardly fusses. Really the only time she cries about being sick is because of the dreaded aspirator. She's getting over it all quickly.

Aunt Mandy and Uncle Seth are here for a week and Kaylee is really enjoying them. She wants to give Aunt Mandy kisses all the time...way more than mommy and daddy ever get! I'll update their visit later.

Then

During the last few weeks of pregnancy, Kate listened to Brad Paisley's new song "Then". She didn't just listen to it a few times, she obsessively played the song on repeat, learned every word, and sung it at the top of her lungs while driving. Then one day a few weeks after Kaylee was born, Kate was driving with Kaylee by themselves. Kaylee began to cry...then scream. It didn't matter how much Kate reassured her, pulled over to make sure something wasn't wrong, or attempted to hold the pacifier in place with one arm backwards while driving. It finally occurred to Kate that maybe Kaylee wants mommy to sing to her (although no one else would want this!). So Kate put track #4 on and began to sing. Kaylee immediately calmed down. Low and behold, it's not even mommy's singing that Kaylee likes! It's Brad's!
